Welcome to the Social Librarian's Blog!

Hi I am Mercia Sias(Snr Librarian) at Groenheuwel Library. Groenheuwel is the smallest Library in Drakenstein Municipality, with so much potential.

Currently the Library only have one table for our Readers to sit and read newspapers or to do school projects. Our space is very limited with a membership of 2500 readers we will turn this Library into the most ideal place to be! With a qualified Librarian and Professional staff we just give our best to improve our services and empower our people in the community

Looking back from our first post in 2010 and where we are today reflects the dedication of the staff and the community of Groenheuwel. Here we are today growing from strength to strength! The Library is hosted in a modular building 6 times bigger than the original space that we had. The library have a small activity hall where lots of activities and workshops take place. We have a membership total of more than 7000 members.

Groenheuwel Library are partnering with VPUU and different other stakeholders to execute most community projects. We believe that strong partnership and collaborative projects will have a huge impact in our communities and will address the objectives most effectively, such as the reduction of crime, alleviation of poverty, elimination of illiteracy and the prevalent inequalities within our community.

GROENHEUWEL NEW LIBRARY'S FIRST BIG EVENT!

Wow! amazing. We had a big event for the community on drumming. We skilled them on how to play drums(the traditional drums) and video filming. This event took place 7, 8 9 May 2010. About 380 children and adults of the area participated in this event.

This project, drumming and filming is part of our sustainable programs which we have to skill our community. On day three the participation played as if they were playing drums for "real". They enjpyed it so much by beating the drum as hard as they could.

The initial idea is to skill them, so that they will be able to establish their own drumming groups. In order to be hired to make music or entertain people.

The community were also skilled in filming. They will form part of a oral history group, which can assist the community development Department on research for oral history.

We are so proud of our readers who participated so well!

Progress at Public Library Groenheuwel

Hi Viewers

I am glad to share with you good things that is happening at our Library, Groenheuwel in Paarl.
those of you, who visited Groenheuwel Library before will know that one of our biggest problems is space. we can only accomodat 15 people in the Library for safety purpose.

I will soon published a photograph of learners working around only one table. They are so eager to produce and deliver a good assignments. As a Social Librarian I want to invite you all to be on the out look of a potential library with little resources. One bounus for this library is a Qualified Librarian, busy with her M.BIBL. studies and 21 years experience in the information world.

As "Social Librarian" I would like to implement some sustainable programs, such as beading, flower arrangement, sewing groups, etc, but due to space this has been put on hold, believe me not for long!
